Ida Applebroog (Fellow in Graphics ‘86, Painting ‘90)
Applebroog has spent the past five decades conducting a sustained enquiry into
the polemics of human relations. Appropriating mainstream media in
innovative and surprising ways, this pioneering artist of the feminist
movement explores themes of violence and power, gender politics, women’s
sexuality, and domestic space using images that are at once beguiling and disturbing.
Applebroog was born in the Bronx in 1929 and attended New York State Institute of Applied Arts and Sciences from 1948-50. She relocated to Chicago in 1956, continuing her studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago from 1965-68). She moved to California, and taught at University of California San Diego in 1973 before returning to New York. Starting in 1977, she circulated a series of self-published books through the mail, and joined feminist journal Heresies: A Feminist Publication on Art and Politics.
Applebroog’s
work has been shown in many solo exhibitions at museums and galleries in the
United States and abroad, including the Institute of Contemporary Art,
Miami (2016); Musée d’Art Contemporain du Val-de-Marne, Vitry-sur-Seine, France
(2014); Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. (1998); The Brooklyn Museum,
New York (1994,1983); Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston (1990); High
Museum of Art, Atlanta (1989); and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (1978), among others.
In 2012, Applebroog presented a large installation at
dOCUMENTA (13), Kassel, Germany. It was her second appearance at the celebrated
international exhibition after participating in documenta 8 in 1987. Her work resides in the permanent
collections of numerous museums including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Museum of
Modern Art, all in New York. Applebroog
is the recipient of many awards, including a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur
Foundation Achievement Award and a Distinguished Artist Award for Lifetime Achievement from the College
Art Association. Her work will be featured in an eponymous show at Hauser & Wirth London from May 19-July 29, 2017.
