Participate in #ArtistHotline: Tips to take best advantage of the day

#ArtistHotline is about resource sharing and building your professional network. Send us your art-related questions.

Artists, have you come across tweets with the hashtag #ArtistHotline and been unsure on how to join in? Well, to participate, all you have to do is:

Sounds easy enough, right? NYFA’s monthly Artist Professional Development Day is a great way to promote your artwork and gain constructive feedback from NYFA and fellow art organizations participating online. Here are a few tips to take best advantage of the day:

Introduce yourself

Most conversations begin with a polite hello! Introduce yourself to the group using the hashtag #ArtistHotline. Kick things off by asking a question or commenting on a tweet. Feel free to note your artistic discipline as well. You can ask us art-related questions like:

  • Can you offer any advice on how to sell my art online?
  • When I contact a gallery, what should I include in my portfolio?
  • How do I grow my artistic practice and improve my networking skills?

This is your opportunity to expand your network through shared interests. Artists and art organizations will be online to provide feedback from 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM EST.

Retweet positive responses

It’s helpful to retweet the responses that you find useful. This adds value to the conversation and will help you to network with participants. Our past chats have brought up some awesome points about the importance of self-promotion, applying to artist residencies, and fiscal sponsorship. View our past chats via Wakelet.

Always include the hashtag in your tweets

This will ensure your questions receive a response and you’re following the conversation. If you don’t use the right hashtag, no one in the chat will see it.

Overall, #ArtistHotline is about resource sharing and building your professional network. If you don’t already have a Twitter account, create a free one now.

Inspired by the NYFA Source Hotline, #ArtistHotline is dedicated to creating an ongoing online conversation around the professional side of artistic practice. #ArtistHotline occurs on the third Wednesday of each month on Twitter. Our goal is to help artists discover the resources needed, online and off, to develop sustainable careers. This initiative is supported by the Emily Hall Tremaine Foundation.
